Verdell
Primeaux is of the Oglalla/Yankton Sioux and Ponca tribe. The son
of noted peyote singer Francis Primeaux, Sr., Verdell was born in
Scottsbluff, Nebraska and represents the Seven Council Fires of the
Lakota and Eagle clan of the Ponca Nation.
Johnny Mike is a Diné (Navajo) from Kitsili, Black Mesa, Arizona. His
maternal clan is Near the Water People and on his father's side he represents
the Salt Clan. Johnny and Verdell have been singing together since 1987 and have
received numerous awards. They are the winners of the 2002 Grammy Award for Best
Native American album.
Over the last decade they've also brought the beauty of peyote singing to a larger
audience. The duo performs at colleges, folk festivals and community functions
both on and off of the reservation.
